We didn’t know if we should scream, weep or jump over aunty shade, we were happy she was finally getting married after all these years but what was going to become of us? If she leaves us and move in with her husband, are we going to start afresh bonding with another sister from the church? We were so devastated and in a twinkle of an eye, we all started weeping. Small mummy hugged us together and we all wept profusely. “Aunty Shade, who is your husband?” “Don’t worry Zina, you all will get to meet him someday” your kids”……… “Small mummy, please don’t get married to a pastor, if not you won’t have time for Aunty Shade left us in the sitting room while she went to prepare dinner. I sat on my favorite couch and fixed my gaze on the T.V set but I was only bodily present, my mind was very far from home. I thought of my siblings, their recent state and here I am repeating ss2. My mind was made up, I needed to do something fast before uncle Seun would spread his virus to other young boys and girls in the church. I quickly called my siblings together and we decided to confront uncle Seun the next day.
Mr. Oluwaseun Williams, your time is up, you have used us enough and it is time for you to hands off from our lives. You see, we are giving you just 24hours to report yourself to the Assistant Pastor of your church where you serve as the choir master. Failure to do this will attract public disgrace from the church as we would make sure that you are expelled from the gathering of God’s children.” “Please, I’m sorry don’t disgrace me, my wedding would be coming up in two months’ time. Please I promise to repent, please don’t embarrass me.” At this point I looked at my siblings and we wondered what wedding Uncle Seun was talking about. We had gone to his house that night after rehearsals and we all had our faces covered and our mouths tied so that when we would speak, he won’t recognise us by our voices. “Could it be that Uncle Seun is small mummy’s fiancé”? I refused to believe that lie, I signaled to my siblings and we went away from his house, we ran as fast as our legs could carry us and we didn’t stop until we got to the church. We removed our masks and headed for our home. On getting home, small mummy was laughing hysterically on the phone and at the end of the call, we heard her whisper “I love you too” to the caller on the other end. I exchanged glances with my siblings and we really hoped our instincts were not deceiving us. Suddenly Aunty Shade slept off on her couch after dinner, Sarah whispered into my ears and I quickly took her phone by her side to check the last caller.
Ade mi” was used to save the person’s number and so I got a pen and paper and copied out the phone number. Casimir promised to give the number a call the next day but our curiosity couldn’t allow us wait for the next day, Casimir and I quickly ran as fast as our legs could carry us to the nearest business center while we asked Sarah to look after small mummy… “Hello, who am I speaking with?” The voice on the other end sounded exactly as Uncle Seun’s, our curiosity was satisfied, uncle Seun was small mummy’s fiancé. I was so devastated, I sobbed quietly as we walked back to the house. “Why do bad things happen to good people? Why should it be aunty shade that would marry uncle Seun after all his atrocities? Why didn’t God open her eyes to see what Seun does? No, no, no, no……aunty Shade will never marry uncle Seun, I must act fast” I said nothing to Casimir while we walked back home, I also didn’t speak to Sarah. My heart was heavy, filled with rage, pains, guilt and regrets. I looked at aunty shade and her beautiful face shone under the chandelier, the more I stared at her the more I wept for I knew she deserved better than being with Uncle Seun……
