The National Bureau of Statistics has on Monday released an alarming report about the increasing rate of poverty among the citizens of Nigeria, the report claim that 82.9 million people are poor in the country.
According to the report, the national poverty line is calculated by consumption expenditures. Any Nigerian who has real per capita expenditures below 137,430 Naira (about 381 U.S. dollars) per year is considered poor by national standards.
The NBS statement goes thus:
“In Nigeria 40.1 percent of the all out populace were named poor. By and large, four out of 10 people in Nigeria have genuine per capita uses underneath N137,430 every year.
“This means over 82.9 million Nigerians who are viewed as poor by national principles. Note that this number avoids the territory of Borno.”
It said while the NLSS 2018-19 included family units from Borno, that example was not agent of the entire state since just families from “open” (safe-to visit) zones were met. “Subsequently, the Borno test is considered non-irregular and non-delegate,” the department included.
According to the 2019 Poverty and Inequality in Nigeria report published Monday by the statistical agency, the highest poverty rate was recorded in Sokoto State which accounted for 87.73 per cent while the lowest rate was in Lagos at 4.50 per cent.
Local observers have warned that with the recent sharp fall in oil prices, compounded by the ravage of the COVID-19 pandemic, the country's economy will probably slide into recession.
