5 Nigerians Politicians Who Switched Parties And Didn't Win Their Elections

Gov. Godwin Obaseki recently received the ticket as the candidate for the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the upcoming Edo State Gubernatorial election switching sides and opting to leave the 'Broom' for a place under the 'Umbrella'. These are actually trying times as our politicians have made our elections season a political transfer season. Here are few politicians who switched political parties and didn't win their election. Could this be the fate of our beloved Godwin Obaseki? I bet only time can tell.

    1. Godswill Akapbio: Former Akwa Ibom State Governor was a card bearing member of the PDP (Let's not forget the was). Under the PDP, he contested as Governor and won across two (2) tenures and also was a senator under the Bukola Saraki-led Senate. Interestingly, Akpabio was the Senate Minority leader. However in 2019, Akpabio resigned and joined the APC. Even with all the opportunity to contest as Senate leader once again, Akpabio lost the election to his former party, PDP. Presently, he is being compensated by President Buhari and is the Minister for Niger Delta Affairs.

    2. Shehu Sani: Do you need a poet, writer, politician and comrade? Then someone's got to order for Shehu Sani, the big nemesis of Gov Nasri El-rufai of Kaduna State. Shehu started out as a member of the Congress for Progressive Change before he joined APC when his party formed the merger. He contested and won elections as the Senator representing Kaduna Central Zone. However, he had series of arguments with El-rufai and Buhari and decided to join a smaller party, People's Redemption Party. He lost the election to Uba Sani of the APC.

    3. Dino Melaye: A graduate of Ahmadu Bello University, Dino has been a main figure in the fight for freedom since his University days. He was a member of the APC where he contested as the a senator of the Kogi-West Senatorial district of the state. However after series of internal battles with the APC, he joined the PDP and lost the election to his successor, Smart Adeyemi.

    4. Alao Akala: Alao Akala is one of the never give up 'John Cena' type of politician. He was deputy governor under Rashidi Ladoja and later contested and won the next election under the PDP. However, he switched political party more than 2 times. He moved the Labor Party (LP), lost the election and later on moved to Action Democratic Party (ADP) and defected to APC before the gubernatorial elections held after the APC won power at the national level.

    5. Rashidi Ladoja: Presently a card bearing party member of Zenith Labor Party, Ladoja was once a member of PDP before he was impeached for corruption related issues. He later contested elections under Accord Party (AP) and lost two times to the late Senator Abiola Ajimobi of the APC.

This might be Obaseki of the PDP and Pastor Iza-Iyama of the APC if they continue this charade. Maybe the tide might fall to either of the duo. Once again, this secret is filled with suspense. Only time, as always, only time can tell.
