It is pertinent and key to note that President Muhammadu Buhari(GCFR) rode on the banks of campaign promises to a landslide victory against his opponent, then President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in 2015. This feet was repeated 4 years later but this time against former vice president, Atiku Abubakar of the same opposition party People's Democratic Party (PDP). The two victories that gave APC the coveted position of the ruling party and relegated PDP to play second fiddle.
Here are 10 campaign promises of Buhari-led administration that would set Nigeria on the global map.
1. Restoring of Ajaokuta steel company back to life: Ajaokuta steel company was one of the major generators of finance for the country years ago. Revamping and reviving it would really help Nigeria's economy.
2. Generation, transmission and distribution of at least 20,000 MW of electricity within four years and increasing to 50,000 MW with a view to achieving 24/7 uninterrupted power supply within 10 years.
3. Creation of over 720,000 jobs by the 36 states in the federation yearly (20,000 per state) and a total of three million Jobs per year coupled with the provision of allowances to the discharged but unemployed Youth Corps members for Twelve (12) months while in the skills and entrepreneurial development programme
4. Making the economy one of the fastest-growing emerging economies in the world with a real GDP growth averaging 10% annually by making Information Technolgy, Manufacturing, Agriculture and Entertainment key drivers of our economy. Shifting away from crude oil is a welcome development
5. Eradication of state of origin, replacing that with state of residence to ensure Nigerians are Nigerians first before anything else. Nepotism and sentiment has caused a lot of havoc as those who are suppose to be in the right positions are not giving the platform.
6. Economic stability for the ECOWAS nations and maintaining a strong, close and frank relationship with West Africa, SouthAfrica, UK, USA, Canada, China, India and other African countries.
7. Full implementation of the National Identification Scheme to generate the relevant data. If we have a very good data base containing information of all citizens in the country, it would help in strategic planning and budget preparing.
8. Balancing the economy across regions by the creation of six new Regional Economic Development Agencies (REDAs) to act as champions of sub-regional competitiveness.
9. Reviving and reactivating the minimally performing refineries to optimum capacity.
10. Stabilising the naira. The recent fluctuation of the naira against the dollar is detrimental to businesses in Nigeria.
