Frank Ribery was the star man for the dominant Bayern Munich as the German side won the Bundesliga, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, German Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
In his 43 appearances for Bayern that season, Ribery had a hand in 34 goals, while the eventual Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo – with his second in a row – only had a Spanish Super Cup to his name but scored a ludicrous sum of 55 goals in as many appearances
However, it was not enough for him to steer away of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. After scoring 66 times, Ronaldo garnered 27.99% of the votes to win the prize, while Messi got 24.72% and Ribery got 23.36%.
In an interview with L'Equipe he stated that "it's more than a disappointment. It's the biggest injustice of my career," he told L'Equipe.
The Bayern Munich star said that it is “incomprehensible” that Cristiano Ronaldo picked up the prize that season after he had enjoyed such a formidable season with the Bundesliga club.
"Not only for me, for many people. I was on top and I finished 3rd."
"I had nothing to envy Ronaldo or Messi that year. I say it in all humility because it is the truth."
However, taking into account Ronaldo's individual performance across the season and the UEFA honour, Ribery claimed his case for the Ballon d'Or was not damaged by himself nor the Portuguese star's outstanding goalscoring record, but more so by the French media.
